The Ireland Sportsman Club
The Ireland Sportsman Club, Inc. started in the upstairs of the old 1915 Ireland High School in 1954 The upstairs was packed with interested peopple to wished to form a conservation club. The editor was at that first meeting when it was decided to have a club. each person had a chance to vote sevred ballot on the club's name. The winner received a lifetime membership.The name above is the official name of the club. However, it is bettern known as the Ireland Conservation Club. The Ireland Sportsman Club was then incorporated on April 7, 1954. The purposes for which it was formed 1. To encourage and promote conservation of wildlife and natural resources in the state of Indiana and elsewhere in the United States of Ameica 2. To receive, acquire, administer and disburse funds or property of every kind, character and nature to prmote conservation of natural resources in the state of Indiana and elswhere in the United States of America. 3. To own, lease, acquire by gift, purchase or otherwise, and to generally dispose of personal property or real estate which may be used in the promotion and encouragement of the conservation of natural resources. The first board of directors comprised of Thomas Schitter, Kelly Armstrong, Levi Leinenbach, Urban Burger, Linus Wagner, Linus Fuhs, Glenn Brittain, Levienes Schitter and Basil Kunkel, Jr. The club purchased 13.12 acres from Othmar and Florence Hurst on March 11. 1955. The club also had an option to purchase 5 acres, which was exercised on December 29, 1958. The club then purchased 6 acres from Alfred and Viola Weisman on March 11, 1955. That made the total acreage owned by the club 24.12 acres. Monies for the club to fund projects are as follows: The club currently has two membership fees annualy. There are shooting matches, currently on five Friday nights usually starting the first Friday of October. The club has a raffle/shooting match on the Sunday following Thanksgiving Day. The club has great modern , which it has expanded and improved over the years, that it rents out to members and groups for functions. These include the Irish Road Bowling, Abate, Boy Scouts, Youth Turkey Seminar, Christmas parties, graduations, wedding recetions, birthday parties, bridal showers, wedding rehearsal dinners and family reunions. The club has a fish fry in the spring and a chicken fry in the fall. As of December 1, 2016, the club has 370 members. Ireland Sportsman Club is located on County Road 550W, about 5 miles NW of Ireland.
